The Parliament of Canada established December 6 as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada in 1991. This is the anniversary day 14 young women at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal were murdered in 1989. This violent gender-based act shocked the nation.

  • This day gives Canadians the opportunity to reflect on the phenomenon of violence against women in our society
  • This day is a day to remember those who have died as a result of gender-based violence
  • This day is a day to take action to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls
