HUMN 101 Spring 2017: Juxtapoz, Walker Evans Exhibitions

Getting Started

Juxtapoz x Superflat, Walker Evans exhibitons.

You have several choices in shaping this assignment. You may choose to write about one work, several works, or you may focus on an individual artist's body of work. You will do research about the objects or artist you have chosen, contextualizing your choice within this exhibition. For your research, you must use 4-6 sources, one of which will be the gallery or exhibition website.

Walker Evans: Depth of Field @ VAG

Begin by reading and rereading your course assignment. Keep in mind the following:

  • required length of the paper
  • the number of reference resources required
  • the kind of documents required to support your research and where to find them
  • any other special requirements

You may find that some of the artists that are a part of the Superflat x Juxtapoz exhibition may not have much written about them or their work. Don't be discouraged from writing about them though. Once you've settled on an artist or artists use the keywords below when searching to help situate their work or works within broader themes (keep in mind, these are suggestions only. Develop keywords as you tour the exhibition, write them down, play around with them when searching for materials):

  • superflat art
  • lowbrow art, outsider art
  • skateboarding culture
  • skate art
  • surf art
  • graffiti
  • street art
  • anime
  • manga
  • comics
  • design
  • illustration
  • painting (think of the type of painting the artist does. Surrealist? Abstract? Figurative?)
  • digital arts
  • great depression (Walker Evans)
  • documentary photography (Walker Evans)

Specific Journals

Two specific titles worth noting for information about artists in the Superflat x Juxtapoz exhibition are Hi Fructose and Juxtapoz. Unfortunately you are not able to search for articles within each magazine through the library discover search. It is best to use the website of each magazine to search for articles about specific artists.

Annotated Bibliography

Your essay handout includes an excellent description of what an annotated bibliography is and what to include when writing one. For further information see the following:
