Traversals: Five Conversations on Art & Writing by Anna-Sophie Springer
Artists' Book #1468

Anna-Sophie Springer is a writer, editor and co-founder of K. Verlag, an independent “curatorial-editorial platform” exploring the various forms that the book can take as a site for exhibition. With hopes of constructing “new geographical and physical encounters”, and often in relation to historical archives, this Berlin-based publishing project engages with themes of nature/culture, post-colonialism, and ethnography. As the current director of K. Verlag, Anna-Sophie allots weight to the importance of collaboration through organizing public events such as panel discussions and public lectures.

Aligning with Springers’ curatorial, editorial and artistic interests, “Traversals: Five Conversations on Art and Writing” (published by K.Verlag) is the product of what was originally produced as an installation titled TRAVERSALS (With Ladder) for the exhibition 5x5Castelló2011 at Espai d’Art Contemporani de Castelló, Castelló, Spain (8 July – 18 September 2011). Here, Anna-Sophie individually interviews five artists and writers (Dora Garcia, Chris Kraus, Mark von Schlegell, Charles Stankievech, Jacob Wren), beginning each interview with one set of five questions, followed by five more questions uniquely crafted in response to the first five answers. The original five questions are as follows:

1 Can you juxtapose one of your earliest and a very recent influence to your thinking and your work?

2 Can you tell me how you feel close to another artist or writer and how that relationship may be manifested/ intertwined in your work?

3 I would like to discuss the dialogues among art and writing, and theory and fiction. Can you talk about how these relationships are at play in your work? By bringing writing into your artwork; by the way that you write on art, blurring the boundaries between theory and fiction; by the way that you view your writing as work?

4 Do you own an artwork? If you do can you tell me about the piece? If you don't, is there a particular reason? (It would be great if you could take a picture of this artwork and include it in your reply).

5 Your work is diverse and often situated in the hybrid spaces between disciplines and genres. Im interested in how you move between established categories and possibly work outside of them. How do you decide which form is needed for the ideas you are working with and how does the context of expression/ interaction with the public determine the form?
