First FAQ is the first volume of a collection of critical, contemporary feminist and queer scholarship emerging from the Department of Art at Aalto University, with contributions from Finnish and international students, among others. The book advocates for non-normative educational, artistic, and cultural approaches that explore largely silenced issues. The texts emerge from personal experiences, but address systemic discrimination embedded within broad institutional and political structures.

Queer Threads: Crafting Identity and Community showcases twenty-nine artists who are moving through the narrow space that is gay or straight, biological or social, craft and fine art and doing so explicitly through their work in fiber and textile. Loaded with gender connotations and power hierarchies, fiber-based handicrafts such as crochet, embroidery, knitting, macrame, quilting, and sewing provide a fitting platform for examining tastes, roles, and relationships socialized within and around gay and lesbian culture, as well as our reactions to the traditional home and cultures in which we were raised. This book evolves from an exhibition of the same name, that John Chaich curated in 2014 at the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay & Lesbian Art in New York City, the first dedicated LGBTQ art museum in the world with a mission to exhibit and preserve LGBTQ art and foster the artists who create it. While other recent, high-profile fiber and textile exhibitions have featured several of the artists in Queer Threads, the Leslie-Lohman exhibition marked the first time these works were shown together to specifically examine the works queerness. To further examine how queerness informs each featured artist's work in fiber and textiles, or vice versa, this book features interviewers from the worlds of music, fashion, media, dance, museums, and scholarship who are makers and thinkers themselves, many members of the queer community if not powerful allies. The resulting dialogues are as fun, challenging, personal, and universal as the ideas in the works discussed.

"Through a series of interview-based profiles of influential and innovative contemporary LGBTQ game-makers and activists, THE QUEER GAMES AVANT-GARDE explores the queer gaming world as an artistic and social movement. Bonnie Ruberg shows us how members of what they call the "queer games avant-garde"-a contemporary vanguard leading video games in more experimental and markedly queer directions-are reimagining video games as a medium for the expression of non-heteronormative desire and counter-hegemonic world-building. The volume foregrounds the voices of queer game-makers as they speak about their influences, their goals, and the challenges they face, as well as the meanings, messages, and even problems with the games they've created. Ruberg's interviews reveal how this new critical mass of game-makers are redefining the medium by placing queerness at the front and center of video games. The book opens with an engaging introduction to the queer games movement and an overview of the network of designers and games that make up this avant-garde. After situating the queer games avant-garde in its artistic and cultural contexts, the book turns to focus on individual members of the movement and the games they have created. This publication offers a critical assessment of the complicity of design in creating, perpetuating, and reinforcing social, political, and environmental problems, both today and in the past.
