Accessing Resources in Databases

Many of the library resources can be searched together through the library’s General Search. However, if you are interested in a more limited search, or want to access resources not found in the General Search, you can access databases individually.

Please note, when accessing databases from off campus you will need to login using your ECU email user name and password. For the full list of databases the library offers please visit the A-Z Database List on the library home page.

General Search
The General Search on the library homepage allows you to search in multiple databases at once. From the search results screen, you can limit the search by format, date, subject, and other facets.

Accessibility features in databases

Large print and text to speech
- Download the article PDF to zoom in on text or have read by a screen reader
- In the HTML view of articles there is often an option to play the text and download as an audio file at the top of the article. Open the settings to change the speed, reader, or text highlighting options.
Video databases
- The ECU Library provides access to education streaming video databases, which you find in the A-Z Database list. Most of these videos will have closed captioning options.

- A great place to start your search for both popular and scholarly articles on almost any topic. Provides peer-reviewed journals, full-text periodicals, reports, books, and much more.
Academic Video Online / Alexander Street Videos This link opens in a new window
- Academic Video Online (AVON) provides access to more than 63,000* (and growing) videos all cross-searchable from a single platform. Includes scholarly video material of virtually every video type: documentaries, interviews, performances, news programs and newsreels, field recordings, commercials, demonstrations, original and raw footage including tens of thousands of exclusive tiles.
ACM Digital Library This link opens in a new window
- The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) publishes over 20 technology-related journals and magazines, Special Interest Group (SIG) Newsletters and 50 annual conference proceedings. An important resource for interaction design, VR/AR/XR, machine reading, etc. The database contains bibliographic information, abstracts, reviews, and the full-text for articles published in ACM periodicals and proceedings since its founding in 1947, together with selected works published by affiliated organizations.

- Art & Architecture Source features full-text articles—as well as detailed indexing and abstracts—for an international array of journals, books, podcasts, images and more. Content includes over 640 full-text journals and more than 225 full-text books. Includes: Art Index / Abstracts / Full Text / Retrospective (formerly Wilson Databases) plus Art & Architecture Complete (EBSCO Database).

- The Art, Design & Architecture collection includes the specialist indexes ARTbibliographies Modern (covering modern and contemporary art), Design and Applied Arts Index (for all aspects of design and crafts) and the International Bibliography of Art (covering scholarship on Western art history), together with a complementary collection of current full-text journals, Arts and Humanities Full Text.

- International in scope, this film database features experimental and indie films, documentaries, instructional videos, radical and avant-garde performance art, and interviews with renowned artists. Also includes videos on dance, music, and theatre performances.

- Free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals which covers all subjects and many different languages. There are currently 9172 journals in the directory and 6407 journals are searchable at article level.

ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) This link opens in a new window
- Contains over 1 million bibliographic citations to education-related resources, including journal articles, government reports, conference proceedings, project and program descriptions, curriculum guides and bibliographies. The database is free to the public and includes online access to the full text of approximately 107,000 documents in PDF. The ERIC thesaurus is available as a menu option on the search screen.
