Research Assistant 2022 - To Change We Must Reflect

To change we must reflect, A look into ECU's past and present in hope of a better future

Celebrating Black Artists and Creatives

I wanted to take some space in my research to acknowledge the success of Black alumni who, although once bound to the white supremacy and racism of the institution, went on to create their own spaces, opportunities, and success as Black creatives. This list is not exhaustive but these are some folks that have inspired this work through personal connection or stories that have been shared with me. On the board below, please add any other Black creatives that attended/attend ECU so that this list may continue to grow in recognition and support of these artists. Please note that comments require approval, and may not appear immediately.

Berlynn Beam and Chase Keetley are two alumni who now run Black Arts Vancouver, a community organization focusing on furthering the arts expression of Pan African youth in Vancouver, Canada. They are both artists that have navigated ECU as Black artists. Berlynn carried on the Black Student Union from Hope Akello in their time at ECU. They did an interview with ECU in 2021 in which they shared their experiences of colonial violence navigating the institution as well as shared their current practice of community building through art.
