Johan Grimonprez
Hatje Cantz (2000)
Belgian multi-media artist Johan Grimonprez uses film, print and installation to criticize the manipulation of media and explore the accessibility of information.
Inflight is an extension of Grimonprez’s film Dial H-I-S-T-O-R-Y that premiered in 1997 at Documenta X. Together, the pieces address topics of aircraft hi-jacking and mass perception via media coverage. The book acts as a parody of airline magazines, featuring elements one would expect to find in such a publication such as safety instructions and in-flight entertainment. While the magazine acts as an accompaniment to a larger work, Inflight proves to be an engaging piece on it’s own. Readers are bombarded with jarring visuals, presented via low-fi, pixelated images and bold typography. Featured articles recount victim’s experiences and media coverage surrounding multiple incidents, from the first trans-Atlantic hi-jacking to “cyberjacking”. Grimonprez includes satirical advertisements that are, in a way, “hi-jacked” in the artist’s manipulation of the content.
