The pages of “Mirror Box” by Ulises Carrión are soft, off-white felt. Each of these is printed with an image of two boxers, one blue, and one pink. The ink bleeds through the felt, leaving a ghostly impression on the facing pages. I am reminded of the presence of touch, rather than violence, in a sport like boxing. The two figures exchange equal hits, meet at the middle, perform the same pattern of moves, and end in a draw.

“Mirror Box” is an example of a situation where form, and textural presence in the hand, are as essential to the experience of the book as the printed content.
Ulises Carrión was the founder of the publisher and bookstore Other Books and So, which operated in Amsterdam from the early 1975 to 1979. I highly recommend his text "The New Art of Making Books" which can be found here.
