Building + Facilites

About the Campus and Building

The Emily Carr University of Art + Design building is Gold level LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified. The building meets the Canada Green Building Council’s standards for waste reduction, energy and water conservation, air quality and more.

The Emily Carr Campus on Great Northern Way is connected to the City of Vancouver's Neighbourhood Energy Utility System. This system provides heat and hot water to the building. It uses waste thermal energy from sewage, eliminating more than 60% of the greenhouse gas pollution associated with heating buildings. This system eliminates the need for the University to burn fossil fuel for heating.

The building was designed and built with various features that contribute to minimizing the Campus carbon footprint. These features include: high performance windows; efficient insulation; efficient lighting with dimmers and occupancy sensors; chilled beams for zonal heating and cooling; and low flow fixtures to reduce water usage.

Recycling & Re-use Initiatives on Campus

Below is a spreadsheet of recycling and re-use options offered by various shops and departments on campus. Feel free to add appropriate items and information as necessary. Or contact mpollard@ecuad.ca.

Carbon Neutral Action Reports

All Public Sector Organizations are required to submit Carbon Neutral Action Reports to the Government of BC. These reports are publicly available on the Government of BC's website.

Below you will find reports submitted by Emily Carr University from 2008 to 2019. The reports provide a record of greenhouse gas emissions, offset purchases, supplies, power use and reduction actions/plans.
