About the LP Collection

The LP collection is housed in the Archives, Artists' Books + Special Collections Room and is a non-comprehensive assortment of experimental sound works, artists' sound recordings, and avant-garde music spanning several decades. The collection emphasizes works that challenge conventional notions of music and sound art, featuring records from:

  • performance artists (Laurie Anderson, Allan Kapow)
  • local artists (UJ3RK5, Brady Cranfield and Kathy Slade)
  • minimalist composers (Steve Reich, Terry Riley, Phillip Glass)
  • artists' run centres and distributers (Or Gallery, Printed Matter, Art Metropole).
  • sound art and documentation of audio installations (Jack Goldstein, Alvin Lucier)

Preservation Notes

This collection represents an important cultural archive documenting artistic movements that often exist outside mainstream music histories. Many items are rare pressings with limited distribution, therefore we ask that the records be listened to in the library using the listening station.
